2nd Amendment QuotesRead this in light of the Well-Regulated Militia.
Whoever said that the founding fathers didn’t think that all citizens should have guns is living in their own little world.
The following quotes by the authors of the Second Amendment, their contemporaries, various state and federal courts, and others should be useful in the debate over whether that amendment protects a right of individuals or only the military.
The Second Amendment states: “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”
First, we must accept that that the purpose of the Second Amendment and the entire Bill of Rights is so people can protect themselves from a potentially hostile future government. There is nothing else that guarantees the continuation of the Republic. People need to be well armed so that Government forces will respect and fear them.
Just like Hurricane Katrina and the L.A. riots, now in Egypt, when citizens need the police the most, the Police are no where to be seen. This is not something that is unique to the Police of New Orleans, L.A., Cairo or Athens… this is a recurring pattern that highlights that police work is only a job. Most of the people who do that job will not put people whom they do not know before their own safety or the needs of their own families.
As a gun owner and a 2nd amendment advocate I am well aware of the battle going on in this state over the issue of gun rights. Particularly, the disconnect between the rural communities and urban centers regarding the issue of drug and gang related gun violence.
Up until this point in the debate over gun control the arguments have been dichotomous and confrontational between those arguing for less restriction and more liberty versus those arguing for more restriction and control of gun sales.
Gun owners and those that support less restrictive laws on gun ownership and the right to carry frame their argument based on Constitutional liberty and common sense but they stop short of offering real solutions to the ongoing epidemic of drug and gang related violence that plagues cities like Philadelphia. Conversely, the politicians from areas that have these problems assault the liberties of all citizens in this state without offering a workable solution to the problems they face. Meanwhile, lives continue to be cut short while the debate rages on between the two sides.
As a very active person for the advancement and education of gun rights in the United States and more specifically in Pennsylvania, I’m usually up against the baseless facts that the anti-gun organizations such as: The Brady Campaign, CeaseFire, Mayors Against Illegal Guns & Moms Against Illegal Guns spew out. I say these facts are baseless because they’re usually facts for criminals, not law abiding citizens. In fact, there are more deaths as a result of car accidents and by medical mistakes than by firearms, but this is something they don’t want you to know about.
